Becoming an Academy
The Governing Body of St George’s School constantly reviews all aspects of the running of the school in order to ensure the best possible outcome for all pupils. In light of this, the Governing Body has been considering that the school should become an academy within the Southwark Diocesan Board of Education Multi-Academy Trust (SDBE MAT).
The process so far has involved these steps.
- Eight months of detailed discussions by the governing body resulting in a unanimous decision to go ahead with seeking academy status following a period of consultation with stakeholders.
- Consultation with staff and parents during May and June. The outcomes of these consultations were positive in supporting this move to become an academy.
- Consultation with the church bodies that have a stake in the school, such as the Parochial Church Council of St George’s church. All bodies were supportive of us going ahead with seeking academy status.
- Final decision by the governing body, following all consultations, to make an application for membership of the SDBE MAT. This final decision was taken at the governors’ meeting on July 5th and the vote was unanimous.
We have now submitted our application to the MAT and await the outcome of the due diligence process that will inform the decision of the MAT and the DfE (Department for Education) with respect to the success of our application. We expect to hear that some time in the autumn.
There were some questions from parents that were not fully answered by the original letter that went out to parents in May, therefore we have updated the question and answer section of that document, and you can find it here.
