Remembering with Respect

Year 5 have been learning about the Poppy, and it's relevance to Remembrance Day.

In Year 5, we have been learning about the significance of the poppy for Remembrance Day as part of our learning in RE.

Throughout the month of November, we have been learning about the importance of remembering in our collective worships, which children have used well to connect with their learning in R.E.

Our R.E vision is:

Be Curious - Be Informed - Be Reflective

We learnt about how the poppies grew in Flanders Fields, Belgium, where John McCrae first saw them and wrote a poem about them growing. We continued to learn about the Poppy Appeal and how the money raised supports veteran soldiers now.

Children created a picture using pastels with a key message about remembrance. They then wrote up about the poppy linking back to Lieutenant John McCrae (a Canadian poet) where the significance of the poppy first started, to now, where money is raised for all veteran soldiers.

Our whole class reading book, Secrets of a Sun King, is set in 1922, at which time some characters were in World War I. Through extracts from the book and our R.E topic of Remembrance, children have been so engaged, many have continuing their learning at home. We are so proud we have such reflective citizens at St. George's.
