Year 1's Global Geographers!

Year 1 have been learning about the continents and oceans of our amazing world.

Our school vision for Geography is:

Be an explorer

Be global

Be outdoors

The class have been fascinated by the globe and have loved learning about its 7 continents: North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, Antarctica.

We learned that 70% of the earth is covered is covered by water which make up the 5 oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern and Arctic.

We have learned key facts about the continents and oceans, such as we live in the continent of Europe, the largest continent is Asia and the Arctic Ocean has polar bears living on the ice there!

Songs have helped us embed the names of continents and oceans in our long term memories.

In groups, the class made maps, recognising and piecing together the continents and adding labels.  We also added the oceans onto a map of the world, realising that the Pacific Ocean is often labelled twice as it is so big and wraps around the globe!

The children identified the equator and the poles, and considered what it is like at countries near the equator.  Year 1 have further explored the world in our travel agent role play, in our airport small world and by completing a puzzle.
