"Let There Be Light: Our Photosynthesis Discovery!

Year 3 have been looking at photosynthesis this week.
This week in science, Year 3 have been learning all about photosynthesis – the process that allows plants to make their own food using sunlight. We explored how important light is for plants to grow and thrive, and how it affects their leaves.
As part of our learning, we carried out an exciting experiment using cress seeds. We planted two pots:
– One was placed on the sunny window ledge
– The other was placed in a dark cupboard.
We watered both pots equally and observed the effects of light – or lack of it – on plant growth.
The children noticed that the cress on the window ledge grew green and healthy, while the cress in the cupboard became pale and weak. This helped them understand how sunlight is essential for healthy plant development.
We also visited our school garden to observe real-life examples of plant growth and discussed why leaves are green – thanks to a substance called chlorophyll, which helps absorb sunlight.
It’s been a hands-on and fascinating week of discovery!
We embodied our Science Curriculum Vision Statement:
Be academic.
Be curious.
Be practical.
