Hockey Heroes Heat Up: St George's Storm the Lewisham School Games

Our Year 5/6 Mixed Hockey team getting 4th place at the Lewisham School games hockey competition.
On Friday 20th June, a blazing sun set the scene for a sizzling showdown at the Year 5/6 Lewisham School Games Hockey Competition, hosted at St Dunstan’s Jubilee Ground. A squad of 11 passionate and determined boys and girls from St George’s arrived with high hopes, hearts pounding, and hockey sticks ready — full of excitement and belief in their abilities.
With ten local schools split into two groups of five, the day promised fierce competition — and the St George’s team rose brilliantly to the challenge. The tournament kicked off with a thrilling 4-goal opener for St George’s, setting the tone and boosting the team’s confidence.
Their momentum didn’t falter. The second match brought another win, still with no goals conceded, as the players displayed incredible teamwork and self-belief. Match three continued the winning streak, with the team digging deep to secure victory again through unwavering determination and spirited collaboration.
Then came the final group stage match — a showdown against another unbeaten side. St George’s struck first, energising the crowd. It was a fiercely competitive encounter, with both teams giving it their all. In the dying seconds, the opposition equalised, resulting in a nail-biting draw. Despite this, the roar of joy was deafening when the group results were announced — St George’s were through to the semi-finals!
The semi-final saw St George’s take on the host school, St Dunstan’s, a well-drilled team who proved to be a formidable force. Though St George’s played with heart and honour, they were outplayed this time and bowed out of the final race.
One more game remained — the 3rd place playoff. With medals in sight and spirits still high, the squad gave everything they had left. It was not to be, and St George’s finished a very respectable 4th place overall. Their efforts were rewarded with medals around their necks and proud smiles on their faces.
Throughout the day, the team truly embodied the P.E. values they cherish at St George’s:
Be passionate.
Be respectful.
Be determined.
Congratulations to all the St George’s hockey stars — you did your school proud! Thank you to Craig and Harry, for yet another excellent tournament.
