π§ Orienteering Morning at School: A Fun-Filled Navigation Adventure! πΊοΈ

This week, pupils from Years 1 to 6 took part in an exciting Orienteering Morning, where the school grounds were transformed into a vibrant learning space full of maps, markers, and movement! πβοΈπ Orienteering is a fantastic activity that helps children develop essential map reading and navigation skills in a fun and active setting. ππ³
Throughout the morning, students learned how to:
-
ποΈ Understand common map symbols, like trees, paths, and buildings.
-
π§ Orientate their maps using real-world landmarks and compass directions.
-
β° Follow line features such as paths and fences to guide their route.
-
π§ Grasp the idea of scale by relating map distances to the real world.
Children worked in pairs or small groups π―βοΈ to complete simple courses, developing teamwork and spatial awareness as they went. With maps in hand and determination on their faces, they confidently navigated around the school grounds, finding markers and solving location-based challenges! ππ
This active, hands-on experience brought our Geography curriculum vision to life:
π Be an explorer – as children used real-world geography skills to investigate and discover their surroundings.
π Be global – as they built foundations for understanding maps and environments used all around the world.
π² Be outdoors – as they immersed themselves in nature and active learning right here on school grounds.
It was a brilliant day of outdoor learning that encouraged problem-solving, communication, and physical activity—all while having lots of fun! πππ
