Jemison Class β Year 1: Imaginary Maps Adventure! πΊοΈβ¨

This week in Jemison Class, our Year 1 children have been busy becoming explorers through their imaginations. Inspired by the much-loved story “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” π», we designed and created our very own adventure maps.
We began by revisiting the story and thinking carefully about all the different landscapes the family travelled through — long, wavy grass πΏ, a deep, cold river π, thick, oozy mud πͺ΅, and even a swirling snowstorm βοΈ! Together we discussed how stories can help us think about the different environments in our world.
Then it was time for us to be map-makers. Each child created an imaginary journey, drawing paths that led through magical forests π³, enchanted lakes π§, faraway mountains ποΈ, and even new worlds of their own invention β¨. We thought about what explorers need when they set off on an adventure, and how maps help us to find our way.
This project links closely to our Geography vision:
-
Be an Explorer π§ – The children thought like real adventurers, planning routes and imagining what it would be like to travel through new places.
-
Be Global π – Our maps took us around the world (and even beyond!), helping us to imagine landscapes and environments different from our own.
-
Be Outdoors π± – Just like in the story, our journeys took us through the natural world, encouraging us to think about rivers, forests, weather, and how we experience them.
The children showed incredible imagination and creativity in their work, and we loved sharing our maps with each other. Jemison Class are definitely becoming brilliant young geographers and storytellers! π
