Drumming Up Creativity: Year 4 Bang Out a Bhangra Beat!

Year 4 Complete Percussion Unit with a Bhangra Beat!
Year 4 have been making plenty of noise—in the best way possible—as they wrapped up their first music unit of the year, all about Percussion! Throughout the unit, pupils explored the vibrant and energetic world of Bhangra music, learning about its origins in Punjabi culture and the instruments that bring its infectious rhythms to life.
The children began by listening carefully to traditional Bhangra songs, reflecting on what they heard and identifying the different sounds and instruments used. They then moved on to learning some basic notes and simple rhythms, which they first practised by clapping together as a class.
Once everyone had mastered the patterns, the children worked in small groups to create their own short compositions—four bars of four beats each. After perfecting their rhythms through clapping, they transferred their patterns to the drums, building confidence and teamwork as they went. The unit concluded with an exciting final performance, where each group showcased their rhythmic creations.

This unit truly reflected our school’s curriculum vision statement for music:
Be inspired.Be creative.
Be dynamic.
The children were inspired by a new culture, expressed their creativity through rhythm, and brought energy and enthusiasm to every beat.

We can’t wait to see how Year 4 continue their musical journey as they move on to their next topic—Singing!
