Goldilocks: Nursery are 'just right'!

We have been very busy in nursery working on our new topic: Bears.

Of course, our learning has been closely linked to our Early Years vision:

Be an Explorer, Be a Trier, Be a Talker, Be a Creator.

Our focus book has been the well-loved traditional tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Through this story, the children have been encouraged to be explorers, investigating the characters, settings and events within the story and comparing different versions, including Nick Sharratt’s modern re-telling.

We have placed a strong focus on the rich mathematical language within the story, helping the children to be talkers as they discussed size and quantity, making comparisons and using words such as big, bigger and biggest. This language was reinforced as the children painted and drew bears of different sizes, allowing them to be creators as they  expressed  their ideas through art and used small world to re-tell the story.

The children also enjoyed working on a Three Bears puzzle, where they practised matching pieces and rotating shapes. This activity supported them to be triers, showing perseverance, problem-solving skills and confidence as they worked things out for themselves.

One of the highlights of our topic was making – and of course eating – the bears’ favourite food: porridge! This hands-on activity encouraged the children to be explorers as they experienced  textures and tastes, while talking together about what they liked and didn’t like.

We have now moved on to exploring books by Jez Alborough, featuring Freddie, a very big bear  and two teddies, and will be continuing to develop our vision through these stories. We look forward to sharing more of this learning with you in our next newsletter.
