A World of Stories: St George’s Celebrates World Book Day

Pupils brought books to life as they dressed as their favourite characters and celebrated reading together across the school.

St George’s Primary School once again burst into colour, creativity and imagination as pupils and staff came together to celebrate World Book Day. From the moment children arrived at school, the corridors were filled with an array of wonderful characters from the world of books, with everyone enjoying the chance to dress up as their favourite literary heroes.

Throughout the day, children took part in a range of activities designed to celebrate reading and storytelling. One of the highlights was paired reading, where older and younger classes teamed up to share books together. This special time allowed pupils to build confidence, practise their reading skills and enjoy stories alongside one another.

Classes also visited the school library, where pupils had the chance to explore the shelves and choose new books to borrow. For many children, discovering a new story to take home was one of the most exciting parts of the day.

As part of our writing focus for the week, the whole school explored the beautifully illustrated and thought-provoking story The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan. Each class used the book as inspiration for their writing, responding to the mysterious creature and imaginative world in ways suited to their age group. The unusual illustrations sparked thoughtful discussions and encouraged pupils to think creatively about characters, settings and emotions.

To continue the excitement beyond the classroom, every child received a World Book Day book token, which they can use at local retailers to choose a new book of their own. This helps ensure that the joy of reading continues long after the day itself.

World Book Day is always a special occasion at St George’s, bringing our whole school community together through stories. The celebrations perfectly reflected our English Curriculum Vision Statement:

Be a reader.
Be a writer.
Be a communicator.

By sharing stories, writing creatively and reading together as a school, pupils were reminded that books can take us anywhere. We are already looking forward to our next reading adventure together!
