The Secret Life of Plant Parts

This week, Year 3 have been busy learning about the different parts of a plant, including the flower, stem, leaves and roots.
We explored the important role each part plays in helping a plant grow, stay healthy and survive. The children learnt that roots absorb water and nutrients from the soil, stems hold the plant upright and transport water, leaves make food for the plant and flowers help produce seeds.
During our science lessons, the children carefully labelled diagrams of plants and discussed how plants need water, sunlight and air to grow. We also examined a variety of flowers and plants closely to identify their different parts. The children impressed us with their excellent scientific vocabulary and thoughtful observations.
To bring our learning to life, we took a stroll around the school grounds to search for plants in our local area. The children enjoyed spotting different flowers, bushes and trees while identifying the roots, stems and leaves they could see. We discussed how plants can look different depending on where they grow and the conditions they need to survive.
It was wonderful to see the children so engaged and enthusiastic during our outdoor learning. Year 3 showed fantastic teamwork, curiosity and observation skills throughout the week. Well done, Year 3!
