From Street Dance to Matilda: An Unforgettable Showcase

Children in Year 5 representing St George's at the 2026 MAT Dance Showcase!

This half-term ended on a high with our very first MAT Dance Showcase — a fantastic afternoon that brought together five schools from across our MAT for an exciting celebration of dance, teamwork, and creativity on Thursday 21st May, 2026.

The event was hosted at St George's and gave children the opportunity to take part in two energetic workshops led by members of staff from St Matthew’s. One workshop focused on street dance, while the other explored theatre dance. The schools were split into two groups, with one group taking part in street dance while the other completed the theatre dance workshop before swapping over, ensuring every child experienced both styles of dance.

During each workshop, the children learnt a range of new moves before combining them together into exciting full dance routines. It was wonderful to see the children stepping outside their comfort zones, performing moves they never imagined they could do, and working collaboratively with pupils from other schools. Throughout the afternoon, the children truly demonstrated our PE values of

“Be passionate.

Be respectful.

Be determined.”

The showcase then brought everyone together for one huge theatre dance performance inspired by the brilliant musical Matilda the Musical. The energy and enthusiasm from all the children created an unforgettable atmosphere.

The afternoon concluded with each school performing their own pre-prepared dance routines. St George's Year 5 children proudly performed their Bollywood dance, which they had been learning during their Spring term dance unit. Their confidence, enthusiasm, and teamwork shone throughout the performance.

We would like to say a huge thank you to St Matthew's for delivering such excellent workshops. The children absolutely loved the experience, and it was fantastic to see so many schools come together through dance.

We are already looking forward to our next MAT event — the MAT Games Day!
