Imperial War Museum 2026!

Year 6 Step Back in Time at the Imperial War Museum!
On Wednesday, Year 6 travelled to the Imperial War Museum London to bring their history learning about the Battle of Britain and the Second World War to life!
Despite getting caught in a heavy downpour on our way, the rain certainly didn't dampen our spirits! We began by exploring the fascinating Second World War galleries, where the children enjoyed the interactive displays, including hiding under tables during an air raid and rushing into an Anderson shelter for protection!
The incredible collection of military uniforms, equipment and wartime memorabilia sparked some fantastic discussions. The children were eager to share their historical knowledge with the adults, making brilliant connections to their classroom learning. We also enjoyed a session with a museum volunteer, who showed us genuine wartime artefacts and photographs. The replica ration book was a particular favourite!
After a well-earned lunch, we ventured into the First World War galleries, where the children enthusiastically compared the two conflicts. They even tested whether they would have met the 5 ft 3 in height requirement for military service! One memorable experience was exploring the recreated trenches, complete with the sounds of bombs dropping around us.
It was a fantastic day filled with curiosity, thoughtful questions and enthusiastic learning. What a brilliant way to enrich our history topic and bring the past to life!
We did this through our St George's curriculum vision statement:
Be inspired. Be academic. Be reasoned.
