Serving Up Smiles: Year 4 Tennis Day a Hit!

Year 4 complete their tennis unit with a fun tounrament!

To wrap up a fantastic Summer Term 1 in P.E., Year 4 pupils swapped classrooms for courts and served up a thrilling end to their tennis unit with a fun, energetic tournament that had everyone rallying for more!

Over five weeks, the children developed their tennis skills through focused lessons that covered all the key shots — from powerful serves and accurate volleys to consistent groundstrokes. They practised rallying with partners and learnt to adapt their skills to both cooperative and competitive settings.

Once the fundamentals were mastered, Year 4 took things up a notch by learning how to play small matches. They explored the rules of tennis and gained confidence in scoring, positioning, and sportsmanship. The excitement truly built up to the grand finale — a mini-tournament that showcased just how far they’d come.

The class was split into two groups for a round robin stage, where every player had a chance to shine. There were fantastic rallies, clever tactics, and a lot of smashing efforts! The top two from each group then faced off in semi-finals: the winner of Group A played the runner-up of Group B, and vice versa. These matches were closely fought, with determination and passion on full display.

The semi-finals and the finals were a gold medal showdown filled with tension, terrific serves, and plenty of applause from classmates. Both players showed outstanding skill and sportsmanship, earning cheers for every well-placed shot and a respectful handshake.

Throughout the tournament, the class embodied our P.E. values:

  • Be passionate: Every pupil gave their all, showing excitement and enthusiasm for the game.

  • Be respectful: Players supported each other, followed the rules, and celebrated each other's success.

  • Be determined: Whether winning or learning, every child showed grit and focus to improve with each match.

The tournament may be over, but the memories and new skills are here to stay. Well done, Year 4 — you truly aced it!

We look forward to our next sport, which will be cricket!
