Ready to Rock!

This week, Year 3 have started their brand-new science topic – Rocks – and it’s been rock-solid fun!
We began by looking closely at igneous rocks. At first, we couldn’t believe where they came from. Could it really be true that these everyday-looking stones began life as red-hot magma deep inside the Earth? Yes – it turns out that when magma cools down, it hardens to form igneous rock. Science is amazing!
The children were fascinated to discover different types of igneous rocks, including:
-
Granite – a tough, speckled rock you might even find in kitchen worktops.
-
Basalt – a dark rock that makes up much of the ocean floor.
-
Obsidian – a shiny, black rock that looks a little like glass!
There were lots of “wows!” as we imagined molten magma bubbling underground, then slowly cooling into the rocks we can actually hold in our hands today.
We can’t wait to keep digging into our topic next week, when we’ll be exploring even more about rocks and soils. Year 3 are definitely ready to rock and roll with science this term!
