We began by revisiting the story and thinking carefully about all the different landscapes the family travelled through — long, wavy grass 🌿, a deep, cold river 🌊, thick, oozy mud 🪵, and even a swirling snowstorm ❄️! Together we discussed how stories can help us think about the different environments in our world.

Then it was time for us to be map-makers. Each child created an imaginary journey, drawing paths that led through magical forests 🌳, enchanted lakes 💧, faraway mountains 🏔️, and even new worlds of their own invention ✨. We thought about what explorers need when they set off on an adventure, and how maps help us to find our way.

This project links closely to our Geography vision:

• Be an Explorer 🧭 – The children thought like real adventurers, planning routes and imagining what it would be like to travel through new places.

• Be Global 🌍 – Our maps took us around the world (and even beyond!), helping us to imagine landscapes and environments different from our own.

• Be Outdoors 🌱 – Just like in the story, our journeys took us through the natural world, encouraging us to think about rivers, forests, weather, and how we experience them.

The children showed incredible imagination and creativity in their work, and we loved sharing our maps with each other. Jemison Class are definitely becoming brilliant young geographers and storytellers! 🌟
