All Over the Map: The Compass Story

This week in Geography, Year 3 became real-life explorers as they learned how to use a compass. The children headed outside, compasses in hand, ready to discover how to find their way around the world.
First, they practised lining up the needle to find north. Excited voices filled the playground as the red needle spun and settled into place. Once they had mastered north, the class explored the cardinal points (north, east, south, and west) and the intercardinal points (north-east, south-east, south-west, and north-west).
To make their learning even more meaningful, the children then linked their compass skills to maps of the United Kingdom. They thought carefully about where England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are situated and used compass directions to describe their positions.
It was a hands-on lesson that made Geography come alive. Year 3 are now confident that, wherever they go, they’ll never be lost — as long as they’ve got their compass!
