Parliament, Politics and the Power of the People!

Best Class visit the home of UK democracy at the Houses of Parliament!

On Tuesday, Year 6 Best Class from St George’s Primary School enjoyed an incredible trip to the UK Houses of Parliament in London. It was a fascinating day filled with history, learning, and a few royal surprises along the way!

The visit began with a journey through time, learning how Parliament has changed from the days when Kings and Queens made all the decisions, to a system where voters began to have a say — and finally to how everyone over the age of 18 now has the right to vote. The children were amazed to discover how many centuries of change and reform helped to shape the democracy we have today.

One of the highlights of the day was entering through the King’s Entrance, the very same grand doorway used by King Charles III when he opens Parliament. Inside, the class were awestruck to see the King’s Throne, beautifully decorated with gold and velvet, where the monarch sits during the State Opening of Parliament.

The tour continued through the House of Lords, where important debates take place and new laws are carefully reviewed, and then into the House of Commons, where Members of Parliament represent the voices of the people. The children were full of thoughtful questions about how laws are made and who gets to speak in the famous green benches!

A particularly moving moment came when the class saw the historic spot where Queen Elizabeth II had lain in state before her burial — a powerful reminder of the nation’s history and traditions.

To finish off the day, Best Class took part in a fun and challenging quiz to test everything they had learned. Using “guessing bags,” they worked in teams to identify key facts and symbols from Parliament’s history — and proved just how much knowledge they had gained from the experience.

Everyone returned to school buzzing with enthusiasm, eager to share their new understanding of British democracy and how the people’s voice helps shape the future of our country.

What a fantastic day out for Best Class — a trip to remember!
