Knead to Know: Year 4 Learn the Secrets of Healthy Cooking

Year 4 enjoyed making bread rolls and pizza during D.T day.

Year 4 had a fantastic time on Wednesday 18th November as they took part in a hands-on, flavour-filled D.T. Day all about Nutrition. The day began with a discussion on what makes a healthy, balanced diet. The children explored the difference between fresh and processed foods, discovering how many everyday products contain preservatives and additives. They learnt that by making food from scratch, we can control exactly what goes into it—making it a much healthier choice.

Throughout the day, the children truly embodied our D.T. values:

Be innovative.

Be hands-on.

Be diagnostic.

                                         Bread Rolls

Our first task was baking delicious bread rolls. Starting with bread flour, the children added yeast and warm water, learning how these simple ingredients begin a powerful chemical reaction. We explored the process of fermentation, understanding how yeast feeds on sugars to create carbon dioxide—helping the dough to rise.

The dough was left to prove for an hour, allowing it to expand and become more elastic. The excitement grew as the children returned to see the transformation! Once risen, they shaped the dough into rolls and baked them for ten minutes. The results were warm, fluffy, and absolutely delicious. Many agreed that freshly baked bread tastes far better than shop-bought rolls.

Pizza

Next came the pizza-making challenge! Following a similar process, the children created pizzas entirely from scratch—this time using a yoghurt-based dough. After mixing the ingredients, they kneaded the dough and rolled it out into their chosen shapes. Tomato purée and cheese were added as toppings, with some children choosing to include vegetables for an extra nutritious boost.

After baking, everyone was excited to enjoy their own homemade pizza slice. Knowing they had created it from simple, fresh ingredients made it even more enjoyable.

Reflection

To finish the day, we reflected on everything we had learnt about nutrition. The children discussed the benefits of cooking with fresh ingredients and how they can now make healthier choices with their meals.

It was a day full of creativity, learning, and wonderful smells drifting through the corridors—well done, Year 4!
