Working Scientifically in Year 1! 🔍

This week, Jemison Class took part in a hands-on Science lesson all about identifying and classifying. Using magnifying glasses, the children explored four different types of trees: Beech, Oak, Scots Pine and Horse Chestnut. They carefully examined each leaf’s shape, size and texture, using these clues to work out which tree it had come from. 🍂👀
The children impressed us with how they connected this new learning to their prior knowledge of the seasons. They discussed how some trees lose their leaves in autumn and winter before growing new ones in spring, while others stay green all year round. 🌱🍁
To deepen their understanding, pupils also investigated what grows from each tree:
- Oak – acorns 🌰
- Scots Pine – pine cones 🌲
- Horse Chestnut – conkers 🌰
This lesson perfectly reflected our Science curriculum vision:
✨ Be academic. Be curious. Be practical. ✨
Jemison Class showed all three as they explored, questioned and discovered more about the natural world around them. 🌍🔎
