Miss Khan at Parliament

Miss Khan attended the Parliament Teacher Ambassador Programme at Westminster, becoming part of a national cohort of teachers working to achieve accreditation with the Parliament Education Team.

Miss Khan was selected to take part in a three-day training course at Parliament alongside 65 teachers from across the UK. During the programme, participants developed a deeper understanding of democracy in the UK and how the Parliamentary system operates. A particular highlight was sitting in on live debates in both the House of Lords and the House of Commons, witnessing democracy in action. Teachers also had the privilege of taking part in a question-and-answer session with the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, gaining insight into his role and the responsibilities of Parliament. In addition, Miss Khan met with Ellie Reeves, MP for Lewisham West, to discuss how parliamentary work connects with local communities and schools.

Throughout the course, teachers heard from previous Ambassadors about how they have used the extensive resources from UK Parliament’s Education and Outreach Team to enrich learning in their schools. Miss Khan is now working to promote these engaging and valuable resources within St George’s, particularly across RSHE, Preparation for Employment and Adulthood, and Community and Outdoor Education.

This really supports us live out the calls to action in our whole school vision statement:

Be brave. Be great. Be you.

Importantly, she has already brought her learning back into the classroom. Shackleton Class recently transformed into the House of Commons, taking part in a lively and structured debate — an experience the pupils thoroughly enjoyed. The session encouraged them to think critically, speak confidently, and understand how laws and decisions are made. Miss Khan is especially excited to continue working with her class to deepen their understanding of democracy and explore the many career pathways within Parliament and public service.

Year 5 Class becomes the House of Commons!
