World Book Day Writing: Exploring The Lost Thing

Check out Year 4's great writing for World Book Day!

World Book Day is always a wonderful opportunity to celebrate books, discover new stories and explore a range of fascinating characters. This year, our class enjoyed a creative writing activity inspired by the book The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan.

As a class, we read the story together and spent time discussing the amazing illustrations that make the book so unique. The detailed artwork helped us think carefully about the world of the story and the mysterious character of the Lost Thing.

After exploring the book, the children became authors themselves. We re-wrote the beginning of the story in our own words and then used our imagination to create a brand-new ending. It was wonderful to see the different ideas and creative twists that the children came up with.

The children also took great pride in presenting their work. Each piece of writing was carefully written and beautifully presented on bordered paper, showing the effort and care that went into their work.

This activity links closely to our English curriculum vision statement:

  • Be a Reader – exploring and enjoying a variety of books

  • Be a Writer – using creativity and imagination to develop our own stories

  • Be a Communicator – sharing ideas, discussing texts and expressing our thoughts clearly

World Book Day reminded us how powerful stories can be and how every child can become a writer with a little imagination. 📚✍️
