Let's talk soil!

Is soil just dirt? As the farmers say: "Soil is what plants grow in, dirt is under your nails!"

In Year 3, we have continued our Chemistry learning and explored the upper layer of the Earth this week, also known as soil! We had a good scientific look at some soil samples and discovered that even a humble petri dish can yield a world of knowledge.

Just dirt? No! We found bugs, insects, decaying leaves, roots and rocks - and that is just what we could see! We learnt that the organic materials are broken down and mixed together by microorganisms, which make up the nutrients for the plants to live and grow.

We are (as always) manifesting the Science Vision Statement:

Be academic.

Be curious.

Be practical.
