It's a Materials World!

Year 1 have been investigating and classifying materials

Our vision for science is:

Be academic.

Be curious.

Be practical.

This week in Year 1 we have been practical by sorting materials based on their properties.  We have been curious to find out why different items have been made out of certain materials.  The children worked in small groups to classify wood, plastic, metal, paper, glass and rock based on two opposing properties.

Then we connected the properties of each material with the needs of items such as scarves, doors, glasses, pavements and toys to understand about the choices made for the best material for the job.  The children were then able to be academic and use a table to record properties words to describe a given material and make decisions for suitable items made from it.
