Mixing madness!

The past couple of weeks, Year 5 has been looking at mixtures and what types of matters are able to mix with each other,

This week, Year 5 have transformed into chemists! We have been looking at mixtures. In particular, we largely focused on what types of matters can mix together and what matters can form a solution.

We took a dive into the world of experiments and looked at different forms of mixtures, being practical. This is what we found out:

We were academic and learnt that certain liquids and solids can mix together and form a solution. For example, salt (solute) and water (solvent) can be mixed together and form a solution as the salt can dissolve into the water. We learnt that certain liquids can mix together but cannot turn into a solution. For example, water and oil. The oil particles can mix but eventually, over time, will form an oil layer sitting on top of the water. Finally, we learnt that sand and water can mix, but again, overtime, the sand particles and solid chunks will fall to the bottom of the water.

Year 5 really enjoyed this lesson and lived out our science vision statement amazingly:

Be academic. Be curious. Be practical.

Being Practical
